At 40th Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries, Chairman Mukesh Ambani has announced 4G feature phone, which will be called JioPhone. Earlier Jiophone was expected to be priced from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1500, but Jiophone will be launched at an effective price of Rs. 0. But Customers have to pay Rs. 1500 as security deposit up front which are refundable after three years.
The device will begin its beta testing from August 15. The JioPhone will be available for pre-orders from August 24 and will be up for sale from September. The company also revised new tariff plans exclusively for JioPhone users as the Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan plan which was priced at Rs. 309 will be reduced to Rs. 153 with all the benefits like free 4G data and of course free local and STD calls without any roaming charges.


The Jiophone will also offer entertainment features like JioTV and JioCinema which could be mirrored on the televisions. But the consumers will have to pay Rs. 309 for using Jio Cable Tv. There are reports that the feature could also be used on Old CRT’s. Jio also released two new small sachet plans of Rs. 24 and Rs. 54. The Rs. 24 plan gives unlimited benefits for two days, while the Rs. 54 one offers unlimited free services for one week.
As for specification the JioPhone will feature a 2.4 inch QVGA display, along with a four-way navigation button and will support 22 regional languages. The device will have FM Radio, 3.5 mm headphone jack, MicroSD card, Torchlight, rear mounted camera, etc. As of now details of the specification are not revealed by the company, but as per rumors the device will come with 512MB of RAM with 4GB of internal storage. On the rear it will sport a 2MP VGA camera and will pack a 2000mAh battery.
The feature phone will be preloaded with a digital voice assistant, and there’s a dedicated hardware button to access the voice assistant. It will come with SOS support which could be activated by pressing the ‘5’ key , a message will be sent to the emergency contact you set up earlier in the device. In future the device will get a software upgrade that will pack NFC support for tap-and-pay payments for customers. In addition, the update will bring banking features such as the linking bank account, UPI account, credit/ debit cards.
The company introduced the JioPhone as ‘India ka Smartphone’ and claimed the device will make the 2G feature phone obsolete. Mukesh Ambani also said he will bring digital freedom in the country by providing access to data at affordable rates and will increase 4G network connectivity across the country.
