Today, The Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has announced their budget-friendly smartphones Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus at an event in Beijing. The main highlight of the smartphone will be its wide-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio and soft-toned selfie light for improved low-light photography.

Xiaomi Redmi 5

Starting with Redmi 5, The smartphone will feature a 5.7-inch display with HD+ (720×1440 pixels) resolution and have an 18:9 aspect ratio. It is fueled by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC clocked at up to 1.8GHz paired with Adreno 506 GPU to handle graphical tasks.

The smartphone comes in two storage options, base variant has 2GB of RAM paired with 16GB of built-in storage, while premium variant has 3GB of RAM paired with 32GB of in-built storage. Both the variants are expandable via MicroSD card.

Speaking of optics, the handset sports a 12MP on the rear camera with a 1.25-micron pixel sensor, an f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, and flash and in the front it offers a 5MP front-facing camera with a soft-light LED flash for selfie and video-call. The smartphone packs a 3300mAh battery and bootup on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat. It measures 151.8×72.8×7.7mm and weighs 157 grams.

Coming to Redmi 5 Plus, The smartphone will feature a 5.99-inch display with Full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) resolution and have an 18:9 aspect ratio. It boasts an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC clocked at up to 2GHz paired with Adreno 506 GPU to handle graphical tasks.

The smartphone comes in two storage options, base variant has 3GB of RAM paired with 32GB of built-in storage, while premium variant has 4GB of RAM paired with 64GB of in-built storage. Both the variants are expandable via MicroSD card.

In terms of optics, It also rocks the same 12MP on the rear camera with a 1.25-micron pixel sensor, an f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, and flash and in the front also it offers a 5MP front-facing camera with a soft-light LED flash for selfie and video-call. The smartphone packs a 4000mAh battery and bootup on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat. It measures 158.5×75.45×8.05mm and weighs in at 180 grams.
As for pricing, for Redmi 5 consumer would have to pay 799 Yuan ($121/€102/Rs.7795) for the 2GB RAM + 16GB ROM, while the 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM variant is priced at 899 Yuan ($136/€115/Rs.8771). The Redmi 5 Plus cost around 999 Yuan ($151/€127/Rs.9738) for the 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM, whereas the 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM variant price is 1299 Yuan ($196/€167/Rs.12673).
The smartphones will go on sale from December 12, and soon they will be up for registrations. The company says the smartphones will come with a free TPU protection case in the box. Both smartphones will be available in Black, Gold, Light Blue, and Rose Gold color variants.
